In the entrepreneurial world, unchecked egos can be a significant liability. It creates a blind spot; if you never listen to critical feedback because your ego gets in the way, you miss the opportunity to correct course before it’s too late.
There is a quote often attributed to the British statistician E. F. Schumacher that captures this perfectly (often misquoted with “Eagles” instead of “Egos”):
“Egos come in all shapes and sizes, but you will recognize them chiefly by their attitudes.”
The Attitude Indicator
Whether the original quote referred to majestic birds or human arrogance, the lesson stands: Attitude is the leading indicator of Ego.
- The Learner’s Attitude: “I might be wrong. What can I learn here?”
- The Ego’s Attitude: “I am right. Why don’t they understand?”
Keeping your ego in check allows you to remain agile, receptive, and ultimately, more successful.
